Here is my missive to the FF industry inviting them to come play in the OR sandbox for Summer Market 2010. Bottom line; small niche markets are no longer served by stand-alone events. In this digital age, the primary purpose of attending a show is to get out of the box and see new methods, techniques, gather new intelligence in a rapidly changing market... oh, and to see new product too. Linking arms with the like-minded active outdoor world can only be good for the fly fishing industry, IMHO. Read on...

hey
we call it "super niche"
and it's good.....

Nice pic of little girl, but wouldn't it have been more appropriate to put a fly angler or a piece of fly fishing equipment as the photo?

Well I guess I should have put that pic in context... That was a girl catching her first fish at the AFFTA Casting Call, an event in D.C. that combined getting capitol hill suits out casting flies on the Potomac with introducing kids to fishing.

While it's tempting for AFFTA to want autonomy and control over their industry, I think you are right. The reality is that participants are no longer dedicated to one sport; they are cross-particpants in many. Therefore, it's a better marketing and business decision for industries to partner up. One large, dynamic show would allow attendees to collaborate and learn from each other. And the OR show is the best I've been to because the outdoor industry has done the best job of including lifestyle in their mix.

Fly fishing is an angling method in which an artificial "fly" is used to catch fish. The fly is cast using a fly rod, reel, and specialized weighted line. Casting a nearly weightless fly or "lure" requires casting techniques significantly different from other forms of casting

Awesome pic of little GIRL, but wouldn't it have been more appropriate to put a fly fisherman or a item of fly sportfishing devices as the photo?

The fly is throw using a fly rod, fishing baitcasting reel, and specific heavy range. Launching a nearly weightless fly needs casting methods considerably different from other types of casting.
