A refreshing breath away from the excess

I've had many friends who during most of our careers have consistently made more than I have, yet always seem short of money - sometimes resulting in multiple refinances of their homes or loans from parents.  That has always puzzled me for young couples making well in excess of six figures in relatively low cost markets.
